A practical beginner manual for choosing mining hardware, planning power and cooling, commissioning safely, monitoring accepted work and maintaining a reliable home setup.

Decision path
Start with the coin, algorithm, pool and household constraints. A technically excellent miner can still be a poor home purchase after electricity, heat, noise, downtime and resale risk are included.

Economics before parts
Mining estimates move with coin price, network difficulty, block rewards, pool method, pool luck and uptime. Use conservative, base and optimistic cases, then replace source figures with measured payouts and wall energy.

Used GPU
Confirm PCI identity and VRAM, inspect the edge and power socket, test every fan, then run memory and compute loads. Reject repeatable errors, abnormal fan noise, corrosion, burnt areas or rapid hotspot rise.
Multi-GPU rig
Read motherboard lane-sharing notes, confirm Above 4G Decoding, add one GPU at a time and use risers and connectors only within their manufacturer ratings.
CPU build checks
CPU mining can be limited by cache, memory channels and NUMA layout rather than boost clock. XMRig’s RandomX guidance explains why automatic thread selection can outperform enabling every logical thread.
Platform
Check the motherboard support list, required BIOS, cooler clearance, VRM airflow and documented DIMM population order before buying.
Tuning
Enable huge pages using the operating-system method, confirm the miner reports success, then test thread counts while recording wall watts and pool-side work.
Purpose-built miners
Low-power hobby units, compact 300–600 W miners and full-size machines drawing several kilowatts can all be advertised for home use. Judge the exact specification, circuit, room and neighbours—not the label.

Power delivery
A PSU wattage label is not a complete power plan. Add GPU/CPU limits, board, fans, storage, startup behaviour and headroom. Measure at the wall with a meter rated for the load.
Bitmain specifies the S21 Pro for 220–277 V AC, single-phase 20 A input and an adapted 4000 W maximum condition. Bitmain also publishes model-specific PSU and cord tables; air-, water- and oil-cooled models can use different parts.
Residential reality
Nearly every watt drawn becomes heat. Fans move heat through a miner but cannot remove it from a closed room. Separate cool intake from hot exhaust and prevent recirculation.

Goldshell specifies the Mini DOGE III Plus at no more than 35 dB, while Bitmain specifies the S21 Pro at 76 dBA at 25°C. NIOSH treats repeated workplace exposure at 85 dBA or higher as hazardous; measure normal operation where people are exposed and consider neighbours and night-time use.

Change one variable, wait for thermal and pool data to settle, then compare with the stock baseline. A higher local hashrate is not an improvement if accepted work falls or wall watts rise faster.
Keep it reliable

Bitmain recommends shutting ANTMINER units down before cleaning and gives a monthly dust-cleaning recommendation. Goldshell advises a clean environment, stable voltage, fan and abnormal-noise checks, and no plugging or unplugging while powered. Follow the exact model manual and warranty conditions.

Protect earnings and equipment
A receiving address can be shared when needed; a recovery seed cannot. Support staff should never need the seed.
